I'm assuming he has some sponsors helping him with the bike. But as a wise friend once told me, Downhill is a rich kids sport

Why is it a rich mans sport?
I got a Downhill bike for 850 dollars, of course its important for the bike to have good suspension and be able to handle obstacles and i think my bike manage to do it pretty well. Other then the bike its up to you to train hard and get good at what you do. Like @imamodel says if you get sponsors, the sponsors pay for transport. Other then all that whats the big cost Speedy-rider?

it's not a rich man sport.. you just have to give up on ther things in llife. You could save so much more money then you realize if you are detirmined. It's all a matter of wich life you want to live. And if you want to get free bikes you have to ride more so you get better. it's as simple as that.

what does it matter how he paid for this sport!!! if he really loves it and is not an ass whole about it then there should not be any reason to question him!

I know a lot of people question me and say that my parents pay for everything, this is not true! I have paid for all my own gear, all of my races, and simply everything has come out of my pocket through working 15 hours a week on top of school and finally find time to ride as much as I can which ends up not being much unfortunately.

the bottom line is get the facts before you judge! It will make your and everyones else's lives much better

Why does this issue come up every time a young kid has a nice bike? He saved up, his parents bought it, he's sponsored, or maybe he sells herb...Who cares. Don't be a hater.

Downhilling is a rich man's sport? Not really. None of my friends or I are rich by any means. We make sacrifices in other parts of our lives to afford what's most important.

maybe he started out on a used bike that wasnt very good but instead of complaining and saying that his bike sucked and that only wealthy people can be good at dh he just dealt with the cheap bike, and went out and rode anyway. then he kept riding, got really good on his cheap bike, now he has a really nice bike and most likely quite a few sponsors.

Hey guys, im the guy in the vid and just wanted clear some stuff up. yeah my parents do help me alot they are really really supportive. i started out on a not so great bike but just progressed in the sport and got noticed by a local bike shop and they have helped me out so much. the last 2 bikes i have riden have been given to me by them. i do pay for most of my own stuff but at 16 and 17 its hard to be able to pay for all your own travel and race costs's when your at school full time and riding alot. i recently got picked up on specialized australia which is awesome, and will help alot with my progression. everyone has to start somewhere and after hard work and practice it all pays off. thanks for the positive comments guys, really appreciate it.

Every time there is a story about a young ripper people start the Bull sh1t about how he must be rich and his parent buy him everything. I know Dave has worked hard to get where he is and when it comes down to it is not as much about the bike as it is the rider. All I see is jealousy
  • - 4
flag PeterDaniel (Oct 17, 2011 at 1:30) (Below Threshold) show comment
Firstly it is not bull shit! If you are lucky enough to have parents who can afford to buy you an expensive MTB, then you are just that....very lucky.
Your right though the bike makes minimal difference and the rider is the gun, but he does actually need a bike to be able to ride?
All i see Is a nieve rich kid!
  • + 4
flag bikeracer28 (Oct 17, 2011 at 13:02)
how can you only see a nieve rich kid???!!!!!!! maybe he started on a cheap bike that he payed for himself and instead of saying that he sucks and everybody is better than him cause they have better bike, just like you peterdaniel are doing right now, he just rode on his cheap bike. now hes good. its not about the bike, in the end, its about the determination and the abilitly of the rider. its annoying when people try to take away from other peoples fortunes by saying its cause they are wealthy or spoiled. seriously, stop complaining, go ride, and dont worry about whats underneath you, worry about whats in you.
  • + 2
flag PeterDaniel (Oct 24, 2011 at 2:07)
Haha I wasn't talking bout the rider champ! I was talking to the person I replied too!

I also agreed that the bike makes minimal difference, the point I am making is....The first post on this Vid is (I'm assuming) a young man that would love to be able to travel the world and ride like this fella, to do so he will first need a bike!

If his parents cannot afford to get him a bike why shouldn't he be jealous of a kid who's parents can afford to get him a bike! Hell man I'm jealous @ 28 and only just being able to scrape a bike for myself. He asked a question and to Answer MTB'ing is a rich mans sport is 100% correct plain and simple. I wish my olds would buy me a bike and a sick Camera to make films for PB, safety gear, travel costs etc. How many kids grow up wishing they could be a motorcross star or a DH champion and never even get to touch a proper race bike till they buy one themselves at 18 or 19? How do they become champions?

Rich kids should just shut up and realise they have a life millions wish for, appreciate what you got instead of calling the poor kids jealous!

Bikeracer you sound so pretentious yet so under educated, these traits hardly suit each other!
  • + 1
flag bikeracer28 (Oct 25, 2011 at 13:24)
but why do they have to wait till they are 18 or 19? im 14 and i bought myself a $600 dollar bmx bike when i was 12 and bought a used dh bike off here last season. and i just custom built a wheel this year for my bmx bike. all of it was with my own money. you dont need rich parents, you just need to work hard for neighbors and other people who will pay you to work. mountain biking is definitely not a rich kid sport. nor is any type of biking. its simply being able to work hard and be determined, although rich parents who buy you everything might help, its not necessary. i bought all my mountain bike stuff accept my helmet, and my armor. which is a total of about 300 dollars worth of stuff, and out of that the only item that is required is a helmet. i dont need all the armor, but it does feel safer to wear it. i like to think of myself as a fairly good mountain biker and bmxer. good enough to go pro at either of them? i dont think so. do i think that if i had time to go ride after school every day and all day on the weekends i would have a fairly better chance at becoming pro? yes, i think i would have a MUCH better chance. basically, work hard, and good things will come to you. slack off and blame it on the fact that your parents dont buy you everything you want/need, then you will get nowhere.

Ever heard someone say Time is Money?

You confirmed it yourself when you said you don't have the time, well either does anybody else that has to work their ass out just to get themselves a second hand bike. How do these kids have the time to practice and race and become so good? Because they already have the money and don't need to spend their time working to get it.

I wasn't at any stage resenting anyone for having more than me, and I have only admiration for their efforts and acheivments.

flag bikeracer28 (Oct 26, 2011 at 12:54)
i dont have time because i play hockey for 2 different teams. i have time to earn money, play hockey, race my road bike, and a lil mountain biking or bmx, and then a little on the side for hanging with friends and other social events. they have time because they focus on that one specific sport, mountain biking. and you said "kids", thats exactly the thing, they made the decision as a kid to work really hard at that one specific sport because thats what they wanted to do in life. they work hard and they achieve their goals.

Mostly the forest around Canberra, Australia (where Peaty won gold). Specifically, Tuggeranong Pines (pine trees and white dirt) and Mount Majura (pine trees and dark dirt - last part of the vid). When he is in the eucalypt forest (white trunks) with the dark dirt that explodes... I couldn't say because that's what the natural forests around here look like.

There's heaps of riding here, mostly on the XC/trail side. And no-matter where you live in Canberra there will be a specific MTB area so close you could ride there in 15 minutes. The bicycle race scene is amazing - road, MTB, two proper BMX tracks, five decent skate parks. Heaps of bike shops. There are more shops that sell Giant in Canberra (population 330,000) than there are in the San Francisco Bay Area (population 7 million).
